Time Change and Time for Fire Safety

It's Time to ''Fall Back'' and Time To Change Batteries in Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Clock and Stars to Fall Back Time and Change Batteries

The Conception of Daylight Savings Time

Daylight Saving Time (DST) was initially conceived by Benjamin Franklin during his sojourn as an American delegate in Paris in 1784. The basic idea was to make better use of daylight during the longer days of summer by shifting an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening.

However, it was not until World War I that DST was adopted and implemented by several countries, including the United States, to conserve energy for the war effort. Since then, DST has been used on and off, with different start and end dates.

Currently, DST starts in the United States on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. The phrase "spring forward, fall back" is used to help people remember how to adjust their clocks.

Lighting the Way for Fire Safety

On November 5th this year, we will ''fall back'' and set our clocks back one hour. While this means an extra hour of sleep for most people, it also serves as a reminder to change the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are crucial for fire safety in the home. These devices can save lives by alerting occupants of a potential fire or dangerous levels of carbon monoxide. However, they can only do so if they have functioning batteries.

According to statistics, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in properties without working smoke alarms. The non-working smoke alarms typically had missing, disconnected, or dead batteries. Shockingly, 80 percent of home fire deaths occur in residences without operational smoke alarms.

Clock and Post It Note Reminder to Fall Back Clock and Change Smoke Detector Batteries

The practice of changing smoke detector batteries at the beginning and end of daylight saving time was initiated by the International Association of Fire Chiefs along with Energizer in an effort to reduce the number of residential fire fatalities.

In 1987, Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs kicked off a campaign known as "Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery" to remind people to replace the batteries in their smoke detectors during the time change.

The campaign was launched after a study revealed a correlation between increased fire deaths and homes without working smoke alarms. The idea was that linking the act of changing smoke detector batteries with an existing and widely recognized routine, such as adjusting clocks for DST, would lead to an increase in the number of functional smoke detectors in homes.

Since its inception in 1987, the campaign has been credited with numerous life-saving interventions and continues to be promoted by fire departments nationwide. The act of changing batteries during this initiative is a simple step that can potentially save countless families.

The importance of this life-saving program cannot be overstated. A functioning smoke detector can offer precious extra seconds for safe escape during a house fire.

By actively advocating for the Change Your Clock Change Your Battery® program, families are encouraged to adopt this simple yet effective habit to ensure their safety.
